In their uncertain world, medieval people saw threats in some unusual categories- namely heretics, witches, and demons- which challenged religious life, gender roles, and political stability. This lecture will explore these perceived threats, including a look at the famous challenge to authority Joan of Arc (1412-1431), some lesser known figures pulled from medieval archives, and the lore and legend around demonology. Join us as we examine some pictorial representations, watershed moments in theology and policy, and recorded experiences of people who either feared this tripartite group, or who were accused of belonging to it! A perfect way to get into the spooky spirit of the season!
